Description
In 1900, William Coffin Coleman was selling high pressure gasoline fuelled lamps. These lamps, notably ‘The Efficient’ Pendant Arc lamp No. 6, were manufactured by Irby & Gilliland in Memphis, Tennessee. However, poor sales led him to acquire the patent for the lamp and redesign it. He began to produce the lamp in 1903, and in 1914 he introduced the Coleman Lantern, a design incorporating various improvements, such as bug-screen and flat base.
The double-mantle models in various versions were amongst the most widespread and were in production from 1927 until 1979 (for model 228) or 1983 (for model 220). This is Model 220F widely reguarded as a 1960’s version.
Coleman still sells a variety of lanterns that are powered by propane, kerosene, or camp fuel (aka white gas). They are still built in Wichita Kansas (though some parts, such as the globes, are made in China) .
