Description

Decorative metal ceilings were first made of corrugated iron sheets, appearing in the United States by the early 1870’s.  It was during the late Victorian era that thin rolled tin-plate was being mass-produced. Between 1890 and 1930, approximately forty-five companies in the United States marketed metal ceilings; most were in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York, located along railroad lines that served as the main routes for delivering the pressed metal products directly to contractors. The Wheeling Corrugating Company out of Wheeling, West Virginia, became the leading tin ceiling manufacturer in the late 1800s. At that time, Wheeling Corrugating was a large steel mill that also made products from their steel sheets such as roofing and siding.

Tin ceilings were traditionally painted white to give the appearance of hand-carved or moulded plaster. They were incorporated into residential living rooms and parlours as well as schools, hospitals and commercial businesses where painted tin was often used as wainscoting.

These vintage original American tin tiles are each unique both in appearance and colour.  They all been painted, often several times, and  have lost most or little of their paint.  The colour shade from the same ceiling can be slightly different too depending on sunlight.  All our Tin Ceiling Tiles are chosen by us in the USA and we ship them over.  They are still so popular that there are now Chinese and Indian reproduction versions.

Styling:  The mounted tile can be hung or leant against a wall as you would a painting.  They are most often used in the kitchen as Aga or range cooker  splashbacks .  In the bathroom as pure decoration or side of the bath.  The coving has made some stunning mirror frames and the deep coving with barnwood on top as a shelf look amazing and unique.  Some like the rusted look, whilst others prefer to give the bare metal a wipe over with Danish oil.  Both look good.  If being used in the garden then the whole tile should be given a wipe with Danish oil or polyurethane for protection and to retain the paint.
