American Styrofoam Lobster Pot Marker Buoy SOLD

Product code: 10814

Green, white and black polystyrene buoy

Dimensions: 19cm Dia x 62cm L

Description

Yellow and pink painted Styrofoam or polystyrene buoy.

This has a white coloured plastic stick that runs through the middle of the buoy and has a loop at the top. The bottom of the stick has been painted pink to match the bottom of the buoy. ‘VC22’ and a number 9 have been written on the buoy in black marker pen.

The paint is flaking off and in places there is black and green paint showing through where it was previously painted. Please see images.

Bright buoys marking the locations of lobster traps have been an iconic piece of maritime culture dating to the late 1800s, when trapping became a common method of lobstering. To distinguish one lobsterman’s traps from others, it became tradition—and then law—to paint buoys a unique pattern and colour scheme. The colours would be registered with the coast guard and this ensured all pots were harvested by the right boat.
