Description
These are 2 Hoosier Spice jars. These jars are perhaps a little younger than the other 2 sets. These have the rings around the centre of the glass body and tighter columns. The ridge around the centre was so that the jar would sit in a rack in the door. The name label shape is on the front but the other does not have the label etched on. Both have the zinc lids, both having the shaker style lid. These are thought to be 1920’s by design with the later ring shape. One of the jars das had extra holes pierced in the lid and subsequently is a little misshapen at the edge.
No chips or cracks. Both lids have been cleaned and polished by the previous owner. Both have dents on the lid. Bought in Upstate New York as part of the contents of the Hoosier we bought. Our customer did not want the jars for the Hoosier.
A Hoosier cabinet (also known as a “Hoosier”) is a type of cupboard or freestanding kitchen cabinet that also serves as a workstation. It was popular in the first few decades of the 20th century in the United States, since most houses did not have builtin kitchen cabinetry. The Hoosier Manufacturing Co. of New Castle, Indiana, was one of the earliest and largest manufacturers of this product, causing the term “Hoosier cabinet” to become a generic term for that type of furniture. By 1920, the Hoosier Manufacturing Company had sold two million cabinets. A major manufacturer of glassware for Hoosier cabinets, and replacement sets, was Sneath Glass Company of Hartford City, Indiana. A Sneath sales brochure lists 11-piece and 10-piece Hoosier sets, and two types of crystal glass sugar bins. The 11 piece set was $1 and the 10 piece set 0.90 cents.
