Large vintage travel steamer trunk wardrobe by Oshkosh Trunk Company in Wisconsin, USA. circa 1930s.
Beige or light tan in colour with red and yellow stripes and brass trims. This trunk contains 6 drawers, separate shoe storage, a laundry bag, and the original wooden hangers. There is a space below the hangers where the ironing board would have gone. Some of the drawers have separators inside to keep smaller items separate, whilst the bottom drawer has webbing across the bottom plus extra straps to keep things in place. The initials H.J.S. Washington D.C. is written in red font on the top and there are a few stickers on the sides. There is also 4 rollerball style feet underneath to help move the trunk more easily.
There is some wear both inside and out on this trunk. The leather handles and press studs have perished and most of it has disappeared. There are scuffs and scratches, some minor stains on the fabric and some of the lining has started to peel away at the base of the wardrobe side. There is no keys included. Please see images.
The Oshkosh Trunk Company initially began producing trunks in 1898, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Its signature line of luggage called the “Chief” was styled with beige duck cloth, with red and yellow stripes. The company also produced an advertising figure of an Indian brave on top of a trunk with the words “Oshkosh” engraved at the base. The city of Oshkosh was named after Chief Oshkosh, (1795–August 29, 1858) chief of the Menominee Tribe from 1827 until his death.
