The company was founded in Denver, Colorado on March 10, 1910 by luggage salesman Jesse Shwayder (18821970) as the Shwayder Trunk Manufacturing Company. A religious man, Shwayder named one of his initial cases Samson, after the Biblical strongman, and began using the trademark Samsonite in 1941 for its tapered vulcanized fiber suitcase, introduced in 1939. In 1965 after the Samsonite suitcase became its best-selling product, the company changed its name to SAMSONITE from Schwyder.
This case label is Schwyder Bros Inc and inside has a label showing Model # 4216.
This case has been subjected to rough handling, i.e. someone who did not understand the opening mechanism on the case. The front cover of the lock has been lifted the wrong way and come off. We could have the cover repaired as it is inside the case, this will be fine for a visual stacking display piece but we don’t feel it will be permanent.
There are a few marks on the outside, the worst being a small spot on the case edge which has been torn. The interior is really clean and complete. Lined in the same pale blue, the pockets are complete, the straps are present and the internal lid curtain and fixings are present. No key.
Please remember when buying vintage items they will have signs of use but that is also what makes them so unique. We do our best to photograph and explain the condition of the item as best we can.
