American wood and cast iron school desk. Designed to be used in rows so that the student behind uses the desk part and the student in front uses the seat.
The desk has a routered groove which would have been used to hold pencils or pens and stop them from rolling off the desk. There is also an inkwell hole in the top right corner. Underneath is a wooden shelf to store books and other equipment when they weren’t being used. The sides are made from cast iron and have been painted black. They feature decorative scrolls and leaves. Embossed into the sides is ‘American S.F. Co., 4 1/2 and Buffalo, New York’. At the bottom of the framework in the feet are holes where the desk would have fastened to the floor. The wooden seat folds up when not in use
The wood shows signs of use, where children have written on the desk as well as other scuffs and scratches. The paint is worn is places but the overall piece has a lovely patina to it and is an attractive item. Please see images.
