Description
Green and white striped painted Styrofoam or polystyrene buoy with a black painted band across the bottom.
This has a pink/white coloured plastic stick that runs through the middle of the buoy and has a loop at the top and a black plastic hook to attach a rope to it.
The paint is flaking off and there is a couple of gouges in the Styrofoam. Please see images.
Bright buoys marking the locations of lobster traps have been an iconic piece of maritime culture dating to the late 1800s, when trapping became a common method of lobstering. To distinguish one lobsterman’s traps from others, it became tradition—and then law—to paint buoys a unique pattern and colour scheme. The colours would be registered with the coast guard and this ensured all pots were harvested by the right boat.
