Description
Antique hand carved round wooden African mask.
This is a solid piece of wood with detailed carved facial features and decorative markings. It has been painted in black and dark red and uses the carved out negative spaces as a third colouring. There are 2 eye holes and a hole for the mouth. Inside the mask shows the original carving marks left from the tools used to hollow out this piece of wood. It has 2 hooks inside and is already strung ready for hanging on a wall.
Inside the mask there has been a wedge carved into when it was made for hanging onto a wall. This part has subsequently had a hole made into it, presumably to hang on a nail or hook. This can be seen in the photographs. There is also what looks like 3 letter ‘B’s’ written on the back.
